An interview with Dr. Dexter Purnell about the new Bachelor of Science in General Business from UNT.
Dr. Dexter Purnell is an entrepreneur and educator with significant experience in the entertainment industry as an artist manager, record producer, recording engineer, and sound engineer. He has worked with Grammy award-winning artists, as well as record labels such as Sony, Disturbing Tha Peace Records, Def Jam Records, Asylum Records, and more.
At the University of North Texas, Dr. Purnell has found the support he needs to foster a learning environment where students and faculty from all walks of life have a path to success. Wanting to bring the same opportunities and mentorship to his students that he has had, Dr. Purnell is now expanding on his work at UNT in the new BSGB program on Coursera. We spoke with Dr. Purnell to hear more about the kindred spirits he has found in his students, his faculty, and now Coursera.
What drew you to UNT? Why are you excited to be teaching there?
The environment at the University of North Texas is great! The organizational culture is amazing. I feel extremely supported here. The leadership really listens and values the input of faculty and staff members.
This is truly an amazing place when it comes to research and teaching. As an R1 institution, UNT is one of the top research universities in the country. There are only 146 other institutions like UNT in this regard and I wanted to enjoy this reputation along with my students.
And I love the students! I have students with all kinds of unique backgrounds—and having a unique background myself, I can really sympathize with them. I know that Coursera draws a wide variety of learners and that excites me.
You’re passionate about reaching a broad array of students with different backgrounds and learning paths. Tell us about your own learning and career journey that gave you this passion.
I began my higher education career as a student at Valparaiso University. I played football there before I left school to pursue my entertainment career. I then started a family and as I thought about what I wanted for my kids, I figured it would be difficult to tell them to get an education when I hadn’t done that myself. I wanted to set an example for my kids.
As I was finishing my bachelor’s degree, one of my instructors told me to consider being a professor someday. But thinking back on my time playing football at Valparaiso, I gave my professors grief and didn’t think I was meant to be anyone’s professor.
Upon finishing my undergraduate degree, I thought, “That was pretty easy. Why not knock out another degree? While I’m in the student mindset, I’ll go get another degree!” Then after completing my master’s degree, I kept hearing the voice in the back of my head saying, “You should try being a professor.” So, I became an adjunct professor! Soon I realized that I still had time to pursue my career in entertainment and here we are twelve years later.
With your successes in entertainment, why continue your career in academia?
The reason I stay in academia is that I love getting the chance to inspire people. During one of my first jobs as an assistant professor, my department chairperson gave me a rock that had the word “inspire” written on it. To inspire means to breathe life. My job is to breathe life into people. I stay because I love to inspire.
Teaching on Coursera offers a whole new way to inspire people from all over the world. What excites you most about this BSGB program being on Coursera?
I am most excited about this BSGB degree being an opportunity for UNT and Coursera to help learners who may not have the time or flexibility to sit in a classroom. A degree from an R1 institution carries a lot of weight for my students, as does UNT’s accreditation from the AACSB—a globally recognized accreditation with the longest standing of its kind.
What kinds of learners do you think will be a good match for this program?
The ideal student is probably someone who has worked in the business world for a while, but perhaps they want to take the next step in their career. They might be happy where they are, but also feel like they could go even further if they learned some more skills or concepts. This degree is great for professionals who have had some business success and want to advance their career or their knowledge.
I’ve had students who have never taken a business or marketing class before. And when they start my class, they’re surprised to realize that marketing is everywhere (whether they can tell or not). When it comes to business management, some of my students have never formally learned any business management concepts. But if you’ve ever managed someone in any way, you probably understand more about management than you think you do.
Please note that the Bachelor of Science in General Business is intended for first-time college students who have earned less than 30 credit hours.
As someone with a great deal of real-world business experience, how important do you feel it is for students to learn real-world skills?
There are always opportunities to take what you’re learning and apply it to your life and to your career. It’s my job to make sure my students see the connections between what they’re learning and the real world. This is why I make real-world examples a key part of my courses.
Speaking of the real world, how does this new program support learners who are balancing real-world commitments as they pursue a degree?
This program gives you the flexibility and freedom to finish earning your degree at your own pace. And although it’s offered on Coursera, you’ll still be working with and learning from UNT professors who teach on the UNT campus. There’s no difference in coursework whether you’re on Coursera or on campus. To put it simply, this is a quality degree.
This has been such a wonderful conversation. Do you have any final advice for someone who is considering this new program?
Don’t be afraid! There can sometimes be a sense of fear or doubt when considering a degree. But as long as you can manage your time, you can succeed in this program. Will it be rigorous? Yes. But will it be doable? Yes. And you’ll be happy with the impact that your hard work can have on your life.

Anisa Ray, MCIT ’22, studied rhetoric in college and then worked as a test prep teacher, getting students ready to ace their graduate school entrance exams. Today, she’s a newly minted graduate of the online Master of Computer and Information Technology (MCIT Online) from University of Pennsylvania and a software engineer at Palo Alto Networks, a multinational cybersecurity company with more than 85,000 customers around the globe.
We sat down with Anisa to learn more about her journey from teaching GMAT tips to writing code that protects businesses worldwide.
What were you doing before enrolling in MCIT Online?
After college I went into teaching test preparation for people taking admission exams for college or graduate school. It started as a temporary thing, but then it became a longer-term thing. I’m also an artist, and the test prep work was flexible enough that I had a lot of time and energy to do art.
What prompted you to pursue a career change?
I reached a point where I felt that I wasn’t growing as much as I wanted to, and the challenges were no longer new. I really liked working directly with people, but I could feel that it wasn’t the final step
for me.
So I went back to the drawing board. I’ve always been interested in learning new languages—I’ve studied Italian and Greek—and I also enjoy problem-solving. For example, I used to create time- saving tools for my students. Combining those two interests led me directly to computer science.
How did you make the transition?
I had no experience in the field at all, so I started by taking Computational Thinking for Problem Solving, Penn’s free class on Coursera. That course really sparked my interest, and I had a lot of fun. So I decided to go for it, and I applied to MCIT Online. I was so excited that I read the entire textbook for the Computer Systems Programming class before getting my admission decision!
With just one course under your belt, did you feel prepared for MCIT Online?
Yes. The program was hard but doable. The material progressed in a logical way that I could follow, especially the programming classes. Once you learn the syntax and understand the sequence to execute it, then it’s just a matter of putting it all together. It was like climbing a steep hill for two years where all you have to do is put one foot in front of the other—it’s tiring, but it’s very clear what the next step is.
What was your experience like as an MCIT Online student?
The remote aspect of the program was wonderful for me. I loved the flexibility of being able to watch
videos at my own pace. I could watch them at double speed or watch them over and over again. It fit
perfectly into my life, and I thrived on it.
Did any faculty members have a particular impact on you?
The program has really high-quality faculty overall, but Dr. Tom Farmer is particularly beloved. He’s a great communicator and his lessons are really well designed, but he also emanates kindness. And when you’re jumping into something new and intimidating, having that support means a lot. He recorded a video for us at the end of class to honor and encourage us, and I’m sure I’m not the only one who cried watching it! Overall, he really inspired me.
You were a teaching assistant for Computer Systems Programming. What was that experience like?
Being a TA was great. It reinforced the course material for me, and it deepened my skills because I was debugging other people’s code. That’s an important skill because when you start a new job, you’re mostly editing and looking at an existing code base, not doing anything from scratch.
Also, people are really appreciative of your help. That’s what I loved about being a teacher prior to joining MCIT Online, so being a TA was a way of connecting my past to my present and future. I really enjoyed helping people overcome the challenges they were facing.
What are you doing now that you’ve graduated?
I’m a software engineer at Palo Alto Networks, a cybersecurity company, where I work on cloud-delivered security. We work with organizations and governments to make sure that their people are connecting safely within the network and to the internet.
I wanted to do something that felt meaningful and to contribute to something far-reaching and hopeful, so I’m where I want to be. Our products are used by massive organizations all over the world, and the company is even helping in Ukraine. It’s cool to be a part of something so positive.
What got you interested in cybersecurity?
I’d heard a lot about hacking, and I thought it would be empowering to learn how to get a computer to bypass what it was intended to do. When you understand its vulnerabilities, you understand its true nature. So I took a cybersecurity class in the program, and that was instrumental in helping me get the job that I have.
How did MCIT Online set you up for success?
The program totally changed my life. I went from having no computer skills to being able to apply for software engineering jobs at a serious company and pass their interviews, which were really rigorous. I have this career in front of me now that wasn’t even in sight before, and it’s what I want to be doing. That’s really powerful.

Today, I’m excited to introduce the Coursera Global Skills Report 2022, an in-depth look at the state of skills globally. The Global Skills Report draws data from 100 million learners in more than 100 countries who have used Coursera to develop a new skill during the past year. The report benchmarks three of the most in-demand skill areas driving employment in the digital economy – business, technology, and data science. For the first time, this year’s report also highlights changes in ranking for each country, and state-specific data for the U.S. and India, where regional variations are notable.
The 2022 Global Skills Report highlights how the acceleration of digital transformation, inflation, and global instability are driving increased demand for digital and human skills needed to thrive in the new economy. The Great Resignation and automation are mandating stronger investments in human capital, as institutions must prioritize developing the high-demand digital and human skills required to build a competitive and equitable workforce. Our data shows these skills are not equally distributed, and students and low-wage workers need access to flexible, affordable, and fast-tracked pathways to entry-level digital jobs that offer a foundation for a stronger and more inclusive economy.
Understanding the Global Skills Ranking
In the Global Skills Report, over 100 countries are ranked against one another, with percentile rankings attributed to each skill proficiency. A country that shows 100% skills proficiency ranks at the top of the 100+ countries, and a country at 0% is at the bottom. Coursera breaks out each group’s percentile rankings into the following four categories based on quartiles:
- Cutting-edge (76% or above)
- Competitive (51% – 75%)
- Emerging (26%-50%)
- Lagging (25% or below)
Global trends in the report include:
- Entry-level or “gateway” certificate course enrollments among women reached 40% in 2021, up significantly from 25% in 2019. Certificates, such as Google IT Support and Google Data Analytics, provide a clear pathway to gain skills needed for high-demand, entry-level digital jobs. These courses require approximately 240 total learning hours, which can be completed in just six months at 10 hours per week.
- There is a strong correlation between skills proficiency, GDP, and broadband access. Wealthier countries scored higher in overall skills proficiency, matched by those with high levels of internet access.
- Developed countries saw more learners acquiring human skills including change management and resilience. Learners in developing countries were more focused on digital skills through courses like supply chain systems and mobile architecture.
- The most popular business and technology skills globally in the last year were leadership and management, probability and statistics, and theoretical computer science. For the second year in a row, Switzerland had the highest-skilled learners followed by Denmark, Indonesia, and Belgium.
- Learners also focused on courses that develop the skills needed to understand the COVID-19 pandemic. Enrollment in courses that cover epidemiology and risk management is now four times higher than it was prior to the pandemic.
Readers can also explore country specific insights. For example, key U.S. insights from the report include:
- The U.S. remained flat in overall skills proficiency at 29th, trailing countries in Asia & Europe. Business skills proficiency rose in the U.S., with key areas like leadership and management increasing from 40% in 2021 to 67% in 2022. However, technology skills proficiency overall dropped significantly from 69% in 2021 to 43% this year. Proficiency in data science also fell sharply from 73% last year to 54% in 2022.
- U.S. learners in the Northeast, Upper Midwest, and along the Pacific Coast had the highest skills proficiency in business, while those in the South lagged behind. Three midwestern states including Illinois, Wisconsin, and Indiana ranked highest in business proficiency throughout the U.S.
- Idaho showed the highest levels of technology skills in the country, outpacing tech hubs like California and Massachusetts. Learners in the state also earned a perfect 100% proficiency for mobile development skills. This reflects a growth trend driven by the number of high-tech companies in the state increasing 61% in the last decade.
- Learners in the U.S. increased focus on human skills amid rapid workforce changes. Workforce disruption caused by the pandemic and the pace of automation is forcing businesses to quickly adapt. Human skills like resilience, project management, decision making, planning, storytelling, and experiments were increasingly popular among U.S. business learners, as organizations worked to navigate change.
- The U.S. achieves greater gender parity in overall course enrollments but women still lag behind men in STEM. The online course enrollment rate for women reached its highest point (51%) in the last year, continuing a trend that started in 2020. Despite a rise in STEM enrollments from 35% in 2019 to 42% in 2022, women still trail men in the U.S.
- The U.S. remains behind the curve in math skills. Proficiency in mathematics among U.S. learners dropped sharply from 56% in 2021 to 40% in 2022. This lags countries throughout Europe including Germany at 81% and the UK at 78% proficiency. Maine, Washington, and New Hampshire had the highest levels of math proficiency in the U.S., while Mississippi, Louisiana, and Tennessee finished in the bottom three.
